  • GENERAL

Suitable for individuals 13 years of age and older.

Aikido techniques include projections, chokes, strikes, sweeps, dislocations and pinning techniques. The technical repertoire is vast but as with other traditional martial arts, it is practiced in an environment of care and mutual respect amongst its practitioners. Through constant practice, commitment and the support of others, each Aikido student will develop at their own pace gaining technical and personal insight throughout the journey.

At SANGEN Melbourne Aikikai we have daily General Classes, morning or evening, six days a week.

In Aikido, as it is in other traditional martial arts, there are two levels of gradings: white belts (going from 5th kyu to 1st kyu) and black belts (commencing at 1st Dan).

All gradings at Sangen Melbourne Aikikai are officially recognised by Hombu Dojo in Japan.

  • CHILDREN

Suitable for primary school age children

(7 to 12 years of age).

Children benefit from physical exercise in a variety of ways, including the development of their motor skills, social skills, mental awareness and focus, as well an increase in their self-reliance and resilience. All these life skills, in combination with the physical literacy obtained during training, naturally develops a sense of self-esteem and confidence.

At SANGEN Melbourne Aikikai we have three weekly classes for children.

The children’s grading system is built from 10th to 6th kyu allowing the student to naturally merge into the General program when they turn the age of 13.

  • TEENS

Suitable for High School age students

(13 to 17 years of age).

Our Teenagers’ Class allows young people to train and develop with other students of a similar age, helping them to grow in confidence and self-esteem amongst their peers.

The Teenagers’ Class follows the same programs as the General Class in terms of Aikido development.

At SANGEN Melbourne Aikikai, students can grade as young as 13 years old for 5th Kyu.

In addition to the Teenagers’ Class, young students are also welcome and encouraged to join the General Classes.

This means an opportunity to train up to eight classes per week.

  • ONLINE

Solo training at home provides a fantastic opportunity to reinforce the fundamental movements and exercises required for correct Aikido practice.

Aikido training is normally expressed between individuals, but to join and blend with another person’s movement is only possible when our own individual movement is efficient and clear.

Solo training is not just an “alternative” but an essential element of Aikido practice.

At SANGEN Melbourne Aikikai we have developed the most effective method for solo training at home that will enhance your Aikido.

All our General Classes are delivered in the dojo as well as broadcasted live for students to train at home if they are unable to attend in person or if COVID restrictions prevent us from training in the dojo.

(*) Friday evening Meditation Session takes place on SECOND Friday of every month only.

(^) Saturday afternoon Shidosha Class takes place on LAST Saturday of every month only.
